Since 1969, West Indies Self Help (WISH) has been a dedicated hand of support to the people of Haiti, specifically focusing on the resilient residents of La Gonâve. Founded by Tony and Pearl Wolf with a vision for improving living conditions through faith and empowerment, we serve as an interdenominational mission governed by a volunteer board. For over 50 years, our heartbeat has been the island of La Gonâve—often called “the forgotten Haiti”—where we walk alongside the community to build a brighter, more sustainable future.
Our work is centered on addressing the most critical needs of the 120,000 people living on the island. Because La Gonâve faces chronic drought, we prioritize providing reliable mountain water, currently delivering approximately 60 million gallons annually through 18 strategic access points. To further support local health and commerce, we operate the island’s first ice plant, providing essential refrigeration and we partner with an organization to provide purified water to thousands of families and the local hospital.
We believe that true transformation comes from within the community, which is why WISH is deeply committed to entrepreneurial development and local employment. We employ more than 20 full-time Haitians and many part-time workers, providing consistent income that supports large extended families. By hosting instructors who teach vital skills, including nursing, agriculture, sewing, and electrical work, we equip individuals with the tools they need to become self-sufficient leaders in their own neighborhoods.
Driven by the love of Christ, we strive to be a consistent source of hope and stability, even during times of political uncertainty or natural disaster. Our holistic approach ensures that physical needs are met through feeding programs that provide 25,000 meals a year for children, while our long-term projects focus on building infrastructure that will last for generations. We are not just a relief organization; we are a lifelong partner to the people of La Gonâve, dedicated to nurturing growth and fostering a community where every individual can thrive.
